The Syrian Board of Medical Specialties (SBOMS) actively participated in the Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Conference, which took place in Greece on the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th of September 2023 in the city of Rhodes. Representing SBOMS were Dr. Ridhwan Rahma, the Head of the Scientific Council for Emergency Medicine under SBOMS, and Dr. Mahmoud Hariri, a board member of the SBOMS.
During the conference, both Dr. Rahma and Dr. Hariri delivered a detailed presentation about SBOMS’s experience in the medical specialization program in Northwest Syria, with a particular focus on the Emergency Medicine specialty. They highlighted the success stories achieved by SBOMS and the significant challenges and difficulties faced by the residency and medical specialization program, including the availability of necessary training experiences and healthcare facilities. The presentation also emphasized key proposals and requirements to enhance the educational process and leverage the accumulated experience of Syrian doctors in recent years, especially concerning war emergencies.
Furthermore, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) from the United Kingdom also participated in the conference, showcasing their experience in supporting and developing Emergency Medicine specialization in Northwest Syria in collaboration with SBOMS.
At the conclusion of the session, the presenters addressed questions from the attendees regarding the overall needs and mechanisms for advancing SBOMS’s work in general and Emergency Medicine in particular, in Northwest Syria.
