In alignment with the Syrian Board of Medical Specializations (SBOMS)’s commitment to advancing local expertise and promoting international scientific collaboration, members of the Orthopedic Surgery Scientific Council—Dr. Salem Abdan, Curriculum Development Officer at SBOMS, Dr. Hikmat Khateeb, and Dr. Nader Shardoub—participated in a specialized workshop on shoulder joint replacement. The workshop, organized by the Turkish Society of Elbow and Shoulder Surgery, took place at Dokuz Eylül University in İzmir, Turkey
The workshop focused on advanced techniques in shoulder joint replacement surgeries, including anatomical replacement (where an artificial joint mimics the natural joint) and reverse shoulder replacement (where the components of the joint are reversed, with a ball placed in the shoulder instead of the socket). Additionally, the program covered complex revision surgeries. The event included both theoretical sessions and hands-on training, with participants from several countries, including Iraq, Morocco, Libya, Malaysia, and Turkey. This collaborative environment facilitated the exchange of expertise and contributed to the enhancement of surgical skills in the field.
The Importance of Shoulder Joint Replacement Surgeries and Their Impact on Healthcare in NW Syria
Shoulder joint replacement surgeries play a critical role in restoring upper limb functionality in patients with severe joint damage. The expertise gained from this workshop is expected to enhance healthcare services in the liberated areas, reducing the need to refer cases abroad.
The participation of the doctors was fully encouraged and initiated by the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Department at the Syrian Board of Medical Specializations (SBOMS), as part of its ongoing efforts to develop medical personnel and transfer modern knowledge to local healthcare institutions. This initiative aims to improve the quality of medical services and alleviate the suffering of patients in the regions served by SBOMS.
The Board reaffirms its commitment to continuing support for training and professional development programs to meet the growing healthcare needs in Syria and acknowledges the efforts of its members in achieving this goal.
